IN a surprising development, Femi Soneye, the spokesperson for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), has stepped aside, over alleged irreconcilable differences with the new management team, News Point Nigeria gathered.
Sources close to the situation told News Point Nigeria that Soneye’s relationship with the new leadership had been fraught with tension for several weeks.
The conflict reportedly escalated after the management accused him of leaking sensitive information regarding the Rwanda Retreat story to Sahara Reporters.
The Rwanda Retreat, a high-profile event that stirred considerable public and political interest, remains a contentious topic within the NNPC.
The management’s suspicion of Soneye’s involvement in the leak led to further mistrust and allegations of disloyalty.
In addition to concerns over the leak, the new NNPC leadership has criticized Soneye for what they describe as poor management of media funds.
Accusations emerged that the media budget under his oversight was misappropriated or spent without adequate accountability, raising questions about transparency and financial stewardship within the corporation’s communication wing.
Confirming his resignation in a statement personally issued by Soneye on Saturday and made available to News Point Nigeria., Soneye said his resignation was to allow him to focus on personal businesses.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you all for the unwavering support, professionalism, and genuine commitment you’ve shown in helping to shape and amplify the NNPC Ltd story over the past 20 months.
“Your role in building a vibrant and effective communications presence for our national energy company has been nothing short of invaluable.
“I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.
“This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence.
“It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd. I am deeply grateful for the trust reposed in me, the opportunities granted, and the incredible professionals both within and outside the organisation with whom I have worked.
“I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage in support of the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future.”
Analysts told News Point Nigeria that this could signal a broader realignment within the organization as the new management consolidates control.
Attempts to reach the NNPC management for comment have so far been unsuccessful as calls and texts were not responded to.
As the story unfolds, many will be watching closely how this leadership change impacts the NNPC’s communication and public image going forward.
